Foundational Phrase...

Know it! Write it! Sell it!

World Class Speaking coaches suggest that you start your speech with your Foundational Phrase.

What is the Foundational Phrase?

It is your overall message. It is the phrase or group of words that you want your audience to take away with them.

If you start with your Foundational Phrase it helps you to clarify your main message, select the right content and deliver your speech so that your message will stick.

Obama's "YES WE CAN" was his main message and it is now embedded into the very fabric of the contemporary landscape. I loved the simplicity of Obama's message and the way he delivered it! You don't have to use big words to create a brilliant foundational phrase. You just need to choose the right words get your message across.

So, think deeply about what your overall message is, and write it down in ten words or less.

For example, in a recent speech my foundational phrase was “know what Your dream looks like”. It took some time for me to pin-point exactly what my main message was, but it was worth doing it, because it helped me clarify what message I wanted to leave my audience with, "Know what your dream looks like". When you know what your dream looks like - you can pursue it with all your heart! When you know what your dream looks like - you are living your dream and not someone else's. "Know what your dream looks like"!

If you start with your Foundational Phrase you will be able to clarify your main message, choose the right content and deliver with impact. It's your message - make it stick!
